On March 3, 1967, SFC Walter J. Fitzpatrick was on a Search & Destroy operation in the vicinity of coordinates XT 091 194 in the Republic of Vietnam, when he was hit in the chest with a metal fragment from a hostile claymore mine.

Awarded:  Bronze Star Medal

Date Action:  15 August 1966  to  3 March 1967

Theater:  Republic of Vietnam

Reason:  For meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile force.

Authority:  By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962.
